How to Fix Slippery Metal Stairs

Making Stairs Safe

If you have ever stepped or walked on wet or oily chequer plate that’s been used on a metal set of stairs you will know that chequer plated surfaces are a slip hazard.

Metal steps are used across the country, often found in older buildings or for outdoor emergency exits. However, as soon as the weather gets wet, metal stairs become unsafe, especially when people rush.

GRP stair treads and nosings are a retrofit, lightweight solution that provides year-round safety to users of metal stairs.

Applications of Anti-Slip GRP Stair Treads and Nosings for Metal Stairs

  • Emergency escapes
  • Fire exits
  • Temporary offices
  • Port offices
  • Historical buildings
  • School buildings
  • Canal footbridges
  • Marinas

GRP Stair Treads and Covers for Metal Steps

The thickness of GRP is consistent throughout the length of the product, and it’s more rigid and resistant to expansion – making it ideal for high-footfall areas. Furthermore, in utilising isophthalic polyester resin with glass woven matting, GripClad’s non-slip GRP stair tread covers reach the highest demands in both safety and durability.

GripClad uses the Pendulum Test method (WF rubber slider, certificate available on request) to measure the GRP slip resistance levels. When dry, the top surface reading comes out at 71, and when wet the reading is 63. Any reading above 65 is considered extremely low for a potential slip – so you can be sure you’re safe with GripClad.

The Dangers of Slippery Port Admin Stairs

The problem: newhaven port authority’s slippery metal stairs

One of our regular customers, Sovereign Construction, was tasked with finding a solution for their client Newhaven Port Admin Offices, as they were having problems with slippery metal steps. The metal outdoor stairs have a chequer plate sheet surface, and those using them found that the steps were extremely slippery in wet weather conditions.

The solution: how to fix slippery metal stairs

GripClad’s GRP anti-slip stair tread covers were proposed as the most durable solution to their slippery stairs. These are made with fibreglass-reinforced plastic (more commonly known as GRP or FRP).

Needless to say, necessary work to the slippery metal steps was undertaken with minimal disruption by Sovereign Construction, and the safety and slip resistance of the steps has been dramatically improved.

An Anti-Slip Solution for Metal Steps

While metal steps may look visually appealing or retain historical accuracy, their slipperiness in wet weather conditions cannot be overlooked.

GripClad’s anti-slip stair treads and nosings help to take away the slip risk of a metal step, making it a safer surface for all. They’re easy to retrofit and are simply screwed into place. We can even fit them for you if you’re short on time!

Anti-slip stair solutions also make stairs more visible, as we can fit glow in the dark or luminous edges, making them seen any time of day.

Benefits of GripClad’s Stair Treads and Nosings
