Graco Spray Machines Guns and Tips Charts

Choosing the right tip.

To choose the right spray tip, requires the consideration of several key factors, such as the material thickness, the sprayer&#;s maximum flow rate and the best fan size for the project. Being able to identify when a tip is worn and replacing the tip at the right time will also improve the finish quality and project devleoment time.

For optimum performance, the sprayer must have a maximum flow rate higher than the flow rate of the tip, to be sure the flow rate of the tip is less than the maximum flow rate of the sprayer unit.

Why use a tip with a lower flow rate?

The tip slowly wears and the orifice becomes larger, resulting in an increase of coating flowing throught the tip and onto the work area. This can lead to an uneven coating of the surface and excess usage of coating material which adds to the overal project cost.

Why is spray pattern fan width also required?

The width of the spray pattern, known as the fan width, determines the area covered with each pass. For a given tip orifice, a wider fan delivers a thinner coat, less defined spray pattern, more over spray and faster coverage on broad, open surfaces. A narrower fan delivers a thicker coat, more defined spray pattern, less over spray and better control when spraying small or confined surfaces.

To maximize productivity and lower labor costs, choose a tip with the right fan size. In general, a spray tip with a larger fan size increases production with less control, and a smaller fan size decreases production with more control.

Advice on buying an airless paint sprayer

I just bought a "refurbished" X5 from American Airless (on their eBay store) Took about a week to arrive, and it was actually a brand new unit. I chose the "A" grade version vs the "B" or "C" grade they had- I paid $204 for it. I think it's about $100 more than that at the big box stores. I'd recommend either it or the X7 (if you want the wheels) I believe they have both on their eBay store.

These units are pretty good and can be rebuilt when you wear them out.

I also bought a finer spray tip to cut down on the overspray and hopefully make a smoother finish on the cabinets I'm about to spray.

In your situation, you may be fine with the 515 tip that these come with. They are pretty good sprayers for up to about 100 gallons/year.

Other things you may consider, Longer hose and swivel joint on the gun, The key to good airless spraying is consistent motion about 10"-12" or so from the surface you are spraying. So while you can get an extension for the gun, you may still need to get on a ladder or get some stilts to spray the ceilings. These units will move a lot of paint, so you need to be aware of that too.

I've sprayed my home's exterior in the past and masking was more of a pain that actually applying the paint. Cleaning these units takes some time, but isn't overly burdensome.

Take a look at Paint Life TV on YouTube. The guy has quite a few videos on airless spraying and prep.
