Cutting titanium or niobium - Everything Else

There&#;s been some experimentation with titanium that was surprising&#; it appeared to produce colors and even remove some material:

WHAAAT!? You can mark uncoated titanium!?

Everything Else

I did a little testing to see what colors I could make. Here&#;s a photo of a few test patterns&#; [image] Mostly blues and yellows. I guess you could call a couple of them &#;red-ish&#;. All of these were done with the laser focused on the surface of the metal at lines per inch. I&#;d like to find a piece of titanium with a more uniform surface before doing any more testing. Somewhere in the testing something interesting happened. I didn&#;t notice it at the time, but it seems that the laser actual&#;

I&#;m not sure if it&#;s ever been reproduced&#; a search of titanium here will yield other discussions, you might want to dig through them and see what you find.

Similar to you Cathy, i used a punch at both ends to make a marked indentation then scored a line at the top and bottom using a ruler and Stanley knife. Kept scoring over until it broke through and snapped off. Piece of emery cloth to tidy up rough edges.

It's probably easier and more accurate then cutting with scissors?...

I've got a supply of small 'disposable medical dressing' sissors which are doing OK service and when they blunt it won't matter.
Ruined my old dissection sissors on titanium foil

I think the ti sheets need to be no more the 5 thou thick and annealed
It also work hardens so you need to not mess about too much,
I have heard that a dremel cutting disc works quite well.
Diamond files work well.
Punching holes is not easy
Drilling is ok with hss bits or cobolt bits with oil coolant.

I used this paper hole punch: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B007JMWFZU/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , worked a treat on the stuff on ebay from Canada.

The batch of foil I'm using now is the stuff from Canada (0.13mm thick) and I think it is noticeably 'toughter' than the stuff I had from Slovakia (0.12mm thick).
Interestingly The Slovakian supplier has some 0.07mm and 0.06mm thick Ti foil up for sale just now&#;.. tempted to get a sample to see how it 'feels'.

Yes, but the final item is IMHO much better in Ti.
Having said that I've just got some nice stiff Ali foil I'm going to experiment with &#;&#;only made a pan lid so far&#;...and the jury is out just yet.

Edit &#;. the 0.06/0.07mmm stuff is only 6" wide so too narrow for cones .
