Glass industry has one primary component and that is silica sand. Here is why.

Also known as White Sand, Silica Sand is a form of Silicon Dioxide, made up of two main elements- silica and oxygen. With its other alternative names being Quartz Sand and Industrial Sand, it also comes in a wide range of other names. The colour of the sand chiefly depends on the rock detritus and a variety of minerals that make up the resource. It is obtained by the quartz materials from the sources like beach dunes and processed into different types and grades of sand, and then supplied to different industries for various applications. Silica sand finds its application in many industries because of its high melting point and low thermal expansion co-efficient. This hence makes it a good choice for applications that involve high melting point.

Keeping these qualities in consideration, it is used as a primary component in the manufacturing of glass. However, silica sand for being suitable to be used as a raw material in glass manufacturing requires a high degree of chemical purity, evenly sized grains and appropriate colour. These requirements are extremely technical and specific because the silica in order to be a proper raw material must be hard, able to resist high temperatures and maintain a consistent appearance as a finished product. Though the production of glass requires a variety of different commodities, silica represents over 70% of its final weight. Its chemical purity is the primary determinant of colour, clarity, and strength of the glass produced.

GMCI Silica sand is also used to manufacture flat glass for buildings and automotive uses. Additionally, it is also used in the manufacturing of container glass that stores foods and beverages. Further on, in its pulverized form, it reinforces glass fibres and is required for the production of fiberglass insulation. Lastly, it is also applied in speciality glasses that include test tubes, scientific tools, television, CRT monitors and also in incandescent and florescent lamps. Being one of the world&#;s most common sand type, we at GMCI offer a wide-range of custom-made formulation and technical/process support services to help you fit the correct grade to your product specifications.
