Stainless Steel vs. Inconel

22 Mar.,2024

One crucial thing to consider when creating a new part is which metal you should use. Although some applications may have concrete answers, such as picking basic carbon steel because it is inexpensive, others may not. Inconel alloys are the ideal choice for parts that require great strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. A portion for handling medical supplies, on the other hand, would be more suited to a stainless-steel alloy.

How Do They Differ?

‍‍Inconel

Inconel is a type of nickel-chrome-based superalloy with excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and high-temperature strength. Inconel can tolerate high temperatures and severely corrosive conditions. The creation of the intermetallic phase works as a “glue” on the grain boundaries. When heated to high temperatures, this glue keeps the grains from expanding in size. Also, due to the passivation layer that occurs when Inconel is heated, it possesses a high corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steels are divided into five categories: austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation hardening. These microstructures determine the stainless steel’s strength and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is a broad collection of metals used in a wide range of applications, including kitchen cutlery, structural building applications, biomedical applications, and food preparation.

Making a Decision

For starters, Inconel is significantly more costly than stainless steel alloys. At high temperatures, Inconel has substantially superior corrosion resistance and strength. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is stronger at lower temperatures. The primary deciding factors for choosing between the two alloys are cost, temperature, and strength. If you need a low-cost, high-strength product, stainless steel is usually the way to go. If an air-critical component with high-temperature requirements is necessary, Inconel is a far superior alloy.
