Threaded rod (also referred to as threaded bar, or all thread) is typically used in building, plumbing and general maintenance applications, to stabilise objects made from wood, metal or other materials. Threaded rods can be used for example to join metal and wood, in wall construction and also in furniture. The threading enables nuts, bolts etc to screw on to the rod quickly and easily.

What is Threaded Rod?

Threaded Rod is a length of metal rod which is fully threaded from end to end. This is where the name “all thread” comes from, while other names include “threaded bar” and “threaded stud” – all of which refer to the same thing.

Threaded rod is one of the most versatile fasteners on the market, supplied in a wide variety of sizes, materials, finishes and thread types. Often used in conjunction with nuts and other internally threaded fasteners, these components are widely utilised in the plumbing industry and can be inserted into wood or concrete to increase stability.

Uses

Threaded rods are found across a range of industries including electrical, agricultural and construction. They are ideal for situations where corrosive conditions are an issue; finding a home in plant maintenance and applications that involve high levels of humidity.

Lengths of allthread are also selected where cleanliness and an aesthetically pleasing fastener is required, such as in the plumbing industry and contractor fields. Other types of threaded rod are located within medical, maintenance and engineering applications.

Types

Threaded bar typically features a right-hand thread. Left-hand thread is also available – often chosen when vibrations may cause a right-hand thread to loosen. Fastenright supply threaded rod with threads at the ends only, with left/right hand threads at opposite ends or with 45° angle cuts at either end.

Allthread can be manufactured with different thread styles including ACME threaded bar which has a 29° thread angle, or Trapezoidal threaded bar with a 30° thread angle. Both types provide a high load bearing capacity and are used to generate power through motion. Threaded bar with fine pitch threads or Imperial threads are also available.

Materials and finishes

Threaded rods are available in a huge range of materials and finishes, including various Steel grades (4.8, 5.8, 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9), as well as A2 Stainless Steel and A4 Stainless Steel. Nylon threaded bar is increasing in popularity – seen as a cost-effective alternative that is sturdy, lightweight and corrosion-resistant. Brass, Aluminium and Titanium are also a popular choice for allthread.

Fastenright supply threaded rods in a wide range of exotic materials – available from stock or to order. These include the likes of Duplex Stainless Steel, Hastelloy, Incoloy, Monel, Inconel, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Waspaloy, Zirconium and Silicon Bronze. Finishing options for allthread include zinc and yellow, powder coating, galvanised and a stayblack finish.

How Threaded Bar is cut to size

Threaded bar is typically supplied in one-metre lengths, with some allthread also available in two-metre and three-metre lengths. Longer lengths can be made to order should they be required. If shorter lengths are required, the bar is cut down by using either an abrasive or cold cutting saw.

A cold cutting blade is significantly quicker than using an abrasive blade due to the rough edge left behind. This rough edge is removed using a grinding wheel to smooth out the cut end if an abrasive blade is used. The final step involves angle cutting or chamfering – this helps to ease the fastening of a nut onto the rod.
